It's time to move to E2EE Messaging Apps with an open protocol - evading EU Chat Control
The way I see it, Chat Control can be a much needed push for us to finally move away from proprietary messaging apps that own your data, and move to a more decentralized world. I see it as an blessing more than anything - we have too many messaging apps with different protocols who all are separately managing all of our communications. It is an outdated system, and we must leave this system now.
If we as consumers can move away from proprietary messaging apps (Signal included), and move to messaging apps using an open protocol, there won't be a way for EU regulations to enforce Chat Control. Apps can be distributed through publishing APKs for Android, and on alternative app stores like AltStore, to dodge Apple/Google squashing it. Web version should also be easy.
The biggest advantage is that governments and regulators can crack down on individual apps, but as long as new clients pop up and are not managed by a single entity, there is no way to completely regulate it. *They can try to regulate it at the ISP level, but at that point it should have gained enough public attention & we can start thinking of the next generation of the protocol such as mesh nets
Fortunately there are some orgs and communities that have been pursing this. Matrix Protocol ( https://matrix.org/ ) is the most promising in my opinion, since there is already an implementation, and multiple client apps supporting this. Another one called MIMI also exists but it seems to be moving very slow, and no implementation yet.
I am going to start my research and my own implementation of an open-source Matrix client messaging app, as well as get people involved to discuss the protocol and ways to increase adoption. I want to get the discussion started in the public. I want to hear people's thoughts - criticisms, ideas, anything.
It is time to get this ball rolling. We can't count on politicians, so any fellow computer scientists / developers here, I would love to discuss what we can do together for a future where privacy-conscious people can comfortably and privately message each other without any technical knowledge.
