Mythpunk Olfactive Petrichor X Reviews
I'm so happy that this collection is once again available and that I can share my reviews β Petrichor X is a perfect example of perfume as art and experience, these scents brought back so many memories and emotions, and are a must-try if you have any interest in atmospherics.
Many of my summer favorites were reviewed in my last thread here All of these scents have been recently restocked, including August's moth, Rosy Maple Moth.
And onto the scents! In the order I tried them:
πΊ PETRICHOR x glass jungle
sulfurous tropical fruit, crushed ferns, fogged glass walls, heady hothouse flowers, unearthly orchids & looming mushrooms, buzzing grow lights, irrigation tubes, sprinkler water
Opens with a cool, refreshing mist and the sweet, verdant scent of damp ferns and the gentle earthiness of their fallen fronds. The delicate fragrance of tropical orchids begins to emerge, their waxy vanilla musk mingling with honeyed citrus.
The increasingly heavy mist brings out the earthy notes, revealing a hint of fresh, clean, mushrooms grown indoors. The fallen ferns become more prominent as well, releasing a bright, herbaceous scent as they're crushed underfoot. The sweet, lemony herbs draw attention to velvety white white florals, partially obscured by the green haze.
This gives me a very clear image of sneaking out at night and exploring a greenhouse full of rare plants, grow lights and cool mist automatically turning on as I enter. Amazing realism.
I'm really impressed by this scent, I was worried it was going to be too heavy on the petrichor when smelling it in the bottle, but it's extremely well balanced and perfectly captures the atmosphere of a greenhouse, more green than fruity or floral on me. I'm not quite sure how to describe what makes this so realistic, but there's something in the aquatic notes that is just so distinct to the water that rains down with indoor grows β like a very chilly and clean spring rain, perhaps a subtle note of plastic tubing?
As someone who doesn't usually go for anything that might smell artificial or fresh/clean in perfume, I thought Glass Jungle would be a really cool artistic/experiential sort of thing for me, but it's actually really wearable as well. If you're looking for the perfect greenhouse scent, this is it.
π β’ PETRICHOR x the lighthouse
the cozy aftermath of a seaside storm - maritime pine, ozone, heather, bloodmoss, rocky wet sand, black tea, wet wool drying by the fire
Ooh, this is surprisingly refreshing β spindly pines drenched in rain and crashing ocean waves amid the cold, electric energy of storm clouds. A rough hewn lighthouse stands on the rocky coastline, surrounded by scrubby patches of moss and heather, releasing crisp green notes and soft, warm florals into the salt air.
As you enter the lighthouse, you're handed a hot mug of malty, black tea, drawing a touch of the heather's caramel sweetness inside, contrasting with the dry warmth of firewood stacked by the hearth. A small, cheerfully crackling fire sends wisps of smoke through the air, filling the room with the musk of thick, wool sweaters, a soft, comforting scent that makes you feel warm and safe inside the cozy lighthouse.
I admittedly took a bit of artistic license with this review, but I just love this scent so much, it really takes you on a journey and balances the marine and cozy notes so well β two of my favorite scent categories but not one you see combined often. The Lighthouse paints such a clear picture in my mind, it's the sort of scent that I would consider art but also extremely wearable.
I had told myself I could only order one more FS from these samples, but I usually can't wear smoke or tea (amp both) so uh, I guess I've already justified this one :p [ETA grabbed two bottles, that maritime pine is so addictive]
β β’ PETRICHOR x night work
a steady downpour on an unapologetically indolic garden of orange blossoms, narcissus, jasmine grandiflorum, rose, and tuberose with cigarette smoke and black coffee
Opens with humid, summer rain over a sprawling, southern garden. The smell of sweet orange and soft, woodsy smoke drifts through the damp air.
A cup of strong black coffee brightens up the scent, bringing out the complexities of the smoke β hints of loose tobacco and a smoky, almost mentholated, spark that evokes images of a newly lit cigarette. It's not an extremely intense or hyper-realistic interpretation of cigarette smoke, but I also wouldn't recommend it to anyone trying to quit smoking β it really brought back memories of chatting with friends while they smoked on the porch, surrounded by the wind and rain of a summer storm.
The smoke is soon calmed, as the woodsy warmth draws out the deep, balsamic notes of the white florals, followed by lush, creamy petals and smooth, sultry musk. The pouring rain amplifies their fragrance, and they are absolute perfection β rich and buttery, with sweet top notes deepened by fallen rose petals.
These are the most beautiful florals, so rich and heady in realistic, but combined with the smoke it's just so evocative of a time that I don't want to remember β it smells exactly like my friends smoking on the balcony above the garden on humid summer nights. However, Night Work is undeniably well-crafted, so if you associate these with fond memories, I really recommend grabbing it because the realism is amazing.
π§ββοΈ β’ PETRICHOR x sylph hollow
sparkling rain on the orchards & gardens in the sylphaene woodlands - peach blossoms, pixie plum nectar, lilac, wisteria, dewy woodland mosses, woodland rain
Opens with glittering rain drops falling on a grove of plum trees, their fruits ripe with sweet, jammy nectar. Silky peach blossoms emerge, creamy petals that add a soft, romantic feeling to the scent.
The rain slows, and the damp air begins to fill with notes of delicate wisteria and plush lilac, highlighting the shimmering sweetness of the spring rain. Damp oakmoss slowly peeks out, a warm base of soft green notes and toasty woods that compliments the sweet fruits and florals.
This is perfectly balanced and blended, just the right amount of florals, fruits and forest atmospherics, all under a delightfully magical rain. If you've tried Fairy Door, Sylph Hollow has a similarly airy sparkle, with that blend of realism and fae magic that I absolutely love. Well it's a bit on the fresh side for me, I absolutely love the feel of this scent, like stepping into a fairytale.
π΅ β’ PETRICHOR x perilla garden
sparkling maesil tea, potting soil, perilla leaf, rhubarb, bean sprouts, rain-soaked hinoki trees, hiba cedar mulch, lapsang souchong, garden rain
Oh, this is lovely, a walk through an idyllic garden on a cool, dewy morning, a cup of tea in hand. The refreshing, tangy aroma of maesil tea's green plums rises into the misty air, mingling with the jammy sweetness of crisp, pink rhubarb.
The vibrant, herbaceous notes of Perilla leaf balance the fruity tea, as tender seedlings sprout from damp cedar chips, adding a softness to the bright greenery.
Slowly the warmth of the surrounding trees reaches the center of the garden, as the circle of Hinoki creates a comforting aura of smooth, rich woods, the heavy morning dew drawing out their soft, woodland spices.
Overall, this is quite a fresh fragrance with an invigorating opening, not my usual style, but the gentle, relaxing warmth of the hinoki makes it a standout in this category.
π β’ PETRICHOR x dude ranch
the rain on the plains - wet green grass, ozone, dust, dried hay, mud, green leather, warm animal musk, blonde tobacco, Virginia cedarwood
Opens with green grass, soaked by heavy rainfall. The dark clouds slowly pass, revealing a sliver of sunlight that begins to slowly dry the freshly-baled hay, filling the air with its toasty, golden warmth and subtle spices. Fragrant cedarwood enhances the warmth, joined by the nostalgic scent of worn, leather saddles and air-cured tobacco leaves drying over the earthen floor.
A warm, snuggly musk emerges, becoming increasingly animalic in a way that is still approachable but sure to bring back memories for anyone who has spent time on a farm or around horses and cattle. At first, I was reminded of the farms I had been to more recently (I live in a rural area), but the musk really took me back to being a kid and having pet cows. I've really been missing them lately and hoping to find a way to make it work with increasing urbanization, so this scent really gave me some emotions. I want to go dig up pictures of being a baby with baby cows now :3
If you're looking for evocative, you can't go wrong with Dude Ranch!
ποΈ β’ PETRICHOR x sunshower valley
chaparral resin exudate, sweet orange, mountain laurel, cold rain warming on damp skin, sagebrush, pinon, wet sand, desert rain, scattered orange blossom petals
Opens with the smell of sweet orange oil and spring rain falling on warm, desert sands and. Soft mineral notes arise as the cool rain covers the cracked earth, softened by the creamy petals of damp orange blossom and the smooth, floral warmth of mountain laurel.
The woodsy, amber resins of chaparral heighten the sweet smell of the rain, as nutty pinon deepens the earthy base. The addition of soft florals and sweet orange really elevates this rainy, desert atmospheric.
Desert fragrances rarely work for me, but there's something about this one that I really love. Aside from the beautiful florals, there's a smooth warmth from the resins (and perhaps a touch of skin musk?) that really set this scent apart from the dry, dusty desert scents. This is no less realistic though, the smell of sweet rain on dry earth is incredibly evocative.
A rainy day with an inviting and optimistic vibe β Sunshower Valley is perfectly named and expertly crafted. A real surprise hit for me, I might have to grab a bottle next season.
π β’ PETRICHOR x the seahorse
cherry lipgloss, gardenia tanning oil, rain falling on chlorinated pool water, wet swimsuits, ocean water slushies, vinyl pool chair slats, and the ambient smell of popcorn and cotton candy from Tomβs Snack Shack
Whoa this is nostalgic β fizzy cherry slushies with extra syrup and a cool breeze carrying dark clouds and humid, salt air. Big drops of cool rain begin to splash into the beach-side pool, drawing attention to the distinctive smell of chlorine, harsh at first, but slowly softened by creamy sunblock and the subtle scent of the damp florals lining the boardwalk. The smell of buttery popcorn and homemade candies follows the botanical notes, perfectly capturing those happy beach days where even the rain can't force you inside.
I'm not a fan of popcorn or chlorine (though neither are overwhelming here), so Seahorse isn't really the sort of thing I would reach for, but it really captures the scene and the feelings around it β very cheerful, very nostalgic, if you like the notes in this one, you won't be disappointed.
Β
I'm still waiting to test one and will update when I receive it:
π₯ β’ PETRICHOR x lost epitaph
briar rose, narcissus, creeping ivy, crumbling headstones, cemetery rain
