Any ideas or guidance for a medium(?) sized quilt?

I want to make a friend a quilt for his bday!

I’ve only made a small baby quilt before - what size is doable for a beginner on a small machine?

Any patterns anyone would recommend I follow?

I don’t have a vision for it yet!

(I’m in the UK in case that matters!)
