Exit row passengers can’t be a family?

On a JetBlue flight rn from JFK to Bermuda. Attendant says we can’t be a family in the exit row. We must be strangers. There’s nothing in the safety card about this. My son is 15 and agreed to the requests by the staff. Both my wife and I agreed as well. Is this a made up rule or legit?
