Remote Work While Recovering from Vaginoplasty?
I have vaginoplasty with Dr. Min Suk Jun next month and I'm torn between requesting FMLA or using all my banked PTO.
I know that FMLA is almost always necessary given the long and grueling nature of recovery, but I'm extremely fortunate to have a fully-remote position. My husband will be traveling with me and is fully prepared to handle everything for me so I can fully focus on recovering, so I feel like I'm in the ideal position to return to work earlier than usual. I have enough PTO to take the first ~2.5 weeks off before having to return to work full-time, though I could also work half-days after my second follow-up appointment for a bit of a smoother transition.
All of this may sound like more hassle than it's worth -- and maybe it is -- but I'd greatly prefer to return to work if I can manage it. Requesting FMLA would most likely result in me being dropped from a major project at work, which would make me far more at risk of being laid off down the line. My husband and I are moving to Canada next year, and being able to keep this job during and after our move makes it much more financially feasible for us given that I'm the primary breadwinner and I need to fully support him while he's in the process of becoming a permanent resident (I'm a Canadian citizen).
That said, there's no point in returning to work if I'm too wracked with pain and preoccupied with dilation to focus on much of anything else, and I'm very much committed to prioritizing my recovery over my work if I can't balance the two.
Has anyone else had experience with working a remote job while recovering, and if so, how far out did you go back to work? What advice would you give someone considering it?
