looking for an article or possibly a tale?

I believe there was time-travel involved, with several packages and letters being sent to or care of one of the named researchers, maybe clef? that were attempts on his life or otherwise anomalous. there were several bombs, and one was a letter from an anomalous group or organization seeking the king of an apple orchard, I think?

that's about all I remember.
