Bug? Mod Griefing?

Has anyone else reached darn near the top of the Kiln and suddenly died? Like, everything is fine but suddenly our screens went black, we got cactus debuff, damage debuff, and then fell into the kiln because we couldn't see. Three of us experienced this last night while playing and I was curious if anyone else has seen this.
