the balrog is a misunderstood good guy who wanted to help the fellowship (spoilers I guess)
The fellowship look like they wouldn't stand a chance here. maybe since Gandalf is with them he might pull off some clutch magic trick, but the hobbits are getting eaten in like one minute and Legolas isn't going to clutch up in a 1v10,000 using a bow. Gimli's comedy relief isn't saving him and Boromor doesn't have that invincibility plot armor that everyone else has. The future king of Gondor ain't surviving that.
All hope is lost until suddenly a Balrog shows up and scares all of the orcs away; this is more clutch than anything which the Eagles have done. The Balrog follows the fellowship because he found his allies and they just run away from him even though the Balrog ain't all that scary when you compare it to the trilogy's weird close-up shots, Denethor's table manners & the odd Wilhelm scream moments.
At the bridge of Khazad Dum Gandalf decides that he is going to gatekeep the fellowship's mission from their newfound bestie and make him fall. This rejection hurt the Balrog and he slimes Gandalf when they somehow get to the top of the mountain because he is insecure and he was rejected from joining the mission.
Middle Earth would have fallen to Sauron had the fellowship been wiped out in Moria and it is because of the kindness of the Balrog's pure heart that they all survive.
