Does Halifax deserve the hate?

Recently, I posted (what I thought was) a fairly innocuous question about renting in Halifax. The responses, while very much appreciated, were, well, pretty grim.

As someone who is currently considering a move there (from Australia), I have to ask "why all the hate?"

Is it really that bad? Why NOT Halifax? Where else would suggest?

Conversely, I'd also love to hear the other side. What's wonderful about living there? Has anyone else made the move? And are you loving it?

If it helps in your responses, here's couple of important things to note about my situation:

• I would be making the move with my Canadian partner (I am Australian).
• I am used to insane rent (again, I am Australian).
• I used to live in Toronto, so feel free to make that comparison.
• I love the cold.
