Skip the 4 PM happy hour... Build relationships with your team like this instead.
I was editing a podcast episode of our CEO, Luke, and Jonni Lundy, COO and Founder over at Resend, and something Jonni said really stuck with me.
Luke and him were chatting about managing remote teams and Jonni shared two cool things that he does to help build and strengthen his relationships across Resend.
Here are some notes I took on what he said:
- Jonni sets up random short chats with team members that he doesn't work with closely.
- As a founder, he realized that he needed to be the one initiating these meetings
- 20 minute meetings with no agenda
- More often than not, get insights on how they see Resend, how a process can be improved, how the culture can be improved, etc.
- Builds relational equity so that when team members collaborate with him on a project they're not starting cold
- Spending time individually with team members who are more introverted to understand what they need in bigger meetings.
- Jonni noticed that more introverted team members were getting overrun in bigger meetings
- Importance in building those one-on-one relationships to create space for them to be drawn out in bigger meetings
Cool, right? I thought these two approaches he shared with Luke really point to the great leader Jonni is. Any similar tips from managers in this subreddit?
If you're curious about listening to the full episode, you can watch it here. It's technically not launched yet (it's still unlisted on YouTube lol), but I saw a lot of posts in this subreddit around similar themes so I wanted to share it. I hope you guys find it helpful!
