Social security

I’m curious, does anyone’s parents on here who have young adult or teenage children keep their social security number paperwork from their kids or do they give it to them? My mom doesn’t want to give it to me even though I’m 18 and need it for work. She says she’s keeping it safe but I’m old enough to know and be responsible.
