Confused About English Proficiency Tests
For context, I am a domestic applicant holding permanent residency. I have spent my last 4 years in a U.S. school.
While I have checked every college’s website and confirmed that I do not need an English Prof. test, two schools remain ambiguous.
Before jumping to conclusions, I wanted to ask yall for some help.
First: CMU https://www.cmu.edu/admission/admission/international-applicants
“If your native language isn't English, you'll need to submit official results from an English language proficiency test. Please refer to the English Language Proficiency Requirements section below.”
Second: MIT https://mitadmissions.org/apply/firstyear/tests-scores/
“For non-native English speakers, we strongly recommend providing the results of an English proficiency exam if you have been using English for fewer than 5 years or do not speak English at home or in school, so that we may consider that information alongside the rest of your application.”
Technically, English is not my native language as this is not the language I first learned; however, after all these years, English has become my strongest language as I speak, read, and write it everyday for school, in my home, etc. This is why, I consider English my first language. CMU & MIT do not make it clear their exact criteria for “non-native” speaker. I also believe that MIT “strongly recommends” it but does not require it. Another thing to consider is that CMU’s requirements fall under international application, so I do not know if they pertain to me. I have also mentioned that English is my first language in “Language” section of the common app.
Please let me know if I’m overthinking or I genuinely need to do submit a test 😭😭.
Thanks for all the support.
