After spending way too much time analyzing meal prep costs vs. cooking my own meals (classic engineer problem), I discovered something that completely changed how I think about meal prep services. I initially thought meal prep services such as Factor or HelloFresh were a great deal for 1-2 person households until I realized the protein gap. I'm ashamed to admit how long it took me to realize this, but these services are not enough to hit your macros for anyone who is active and looking to maintain or increase muscle mass. Here are a few things I learned:

**The time difference is insane:** Traditional cooking averages 9+ hours weekly for a couple when you include meal planning, grocery shopping, and actual cooking vs meal prep services at under 30 minutes. That's literally giving you back a full workday every week.

**For smaller households (1-2 people), meal prep services are actually cost-competitive** when you factor in time value. The convenience premium isn't as steep as I expected.

**But here's the kicker - the protein gap is MASSIVE.** If you're even moderately active (shooting for 0.8-1.2g protein per lb bodyweight), most meal prep services only hit about 60% of your needs.

I plugged in numbers for a couple with 120g protein goals each (very moderate) and discovered that filling that 60g daily gap per person requires either:

* 2+ additional meals per day (+$168/week per person)
* Going back to traditional cooking for protein sources (added time cost)

This essentially doubles your weekly cost and defeats the time-saving purpose. For an active couple? We're talking $500+ weekly just to hit basic protein targets.

**Here's what I've learned works:** Use AI tools to quickly plan high-protein additions without the mental overhead. The decision fatigue is real. We think about how much work meal planning will take and just... stop. AI eliminates that barrier by handling the "what should I eat" paralysis in seconds.

**The sweet spot seems to be:** Meal prep services for convenience + AI-planned high-protein additions (chicken thighs, ground turkey, protein smoothies) that you can batch cook once weekly.

Anyone else run into this protein wall with meal prep services? How are you filling the gap without the planning burnout?

*P.S. - Happy to share the calculator if anyone wants to run their own numbers. DM me and I'll send the link.*

I built a cost calculator comparing meal prep services vs traditional cooking and the protein gap stunned me
