Need help diagnosing an issue with my laptop's screen.

Open | Hardware

The top half of my laptop screen is broken.

It started about four days ago when the top half of my screen would sometimes just bug out and glitch. It wasn't really permanent(yet). I just close the lid, open it back up again, and the top half of the screen goes back to normal. Originally, I thought that it was bugging out because the bottom panel was moved in a certain way, so I kinda thought that the issue is in the bottom panel itself.

Two days later, I accidentally--and very very lightly--slammed the laptop's bottom lid on a table, and that's when the top half of my screen became permanently broken.

And for the last two days, I've been trying to diagnose the issue myself. But since I had no damn clue what I was doing, I've been pretty much relying on ChatGPT for awhile.

I pretty much pried the laptop open myself to check if it was because the digital cables were lose or anything, and they seemed pretty fine--which is another term for: I have no clue what I'm doing and I am too scared to pull any cables out and reseat them--So I just reassembled the laptop and tried to gather as much information as I could on the issue so I could plop it up here and have someone diagnose it themselves.

So here's a few things I noticed:

  1. The top half of the screen is actually showing what SHOULD be in the top half of my screen. It's not black, it's not white. Originally, I thought it was just showing some ghostly echo of the bottom half of the screen, but as I looked into it, it's actually just a really bleached out and ghostly image of the things that should be in the top half of my screen.

Like, when I was actually turning the laptop on, a faint "Acer" text would slowly and gradually form in the broken half of the screen. The "Acer" text should've been no where near the bottom of the screen, so it couldn't have come from there.

  1. Sometimes, the whole top panel would actually just freeze up and the screen would start slowly fading or something. I just close the lid or put the laptop on sleep mode, anything to just turn the screen off. Then when I turn it on, it just turns back to normal... yunno, except for the broken half, of course. I figured the LCD isn't exactly the only issue at play here.

  2. The display cable seems secure(?)

Again, I'm not exactly a tech guy. But I did pop open this laptop and checked the display cable on both panels. They seem secure, and I'm way too scared to reseat them myself.

And... yah. Could anyone help me figure out what the heck is wrong with my laptop?

Is it just a top panel issue? Do I just need to replace the LCD? Or is there something wrong with the bottom panel too?
