Bringing the NBA’s “Usage Rate” Metric to Football

In basketball, usage rate measures how often a player ends a possession — by shooting, assisting, or turning the ball over. It’s one of the key ways to understand a player’s offensive role.

Football doesn’t have a direct equivalent, so I tried building one.

Here’s the process:

  • Defining “possession-ending events” in football
  • Calculating player share of those events within their team
  • Applying it to Premier League data to see who dominates their team’s usage
  • Comparing the insights to traditional stats like goals and assists

Curious how others here would approach this — would you define possessions differently? What events would you count?
