Do you have a reading system? Or do you just read?

My questions in brief: Do you have a reading system? Is there a healthy middle ground to obsessively noting things down versus reading something and immediately forgetting it?

Lately, I've been obsessing with retaining the materials that I read, rather than just passively consuming.

This is part of a larger life project of mine to be more conscious and intentional in my media consumption.  Rather than reading and immediately forgetting things, I am trying to somehow "store" the information for future writing, all in an attempt to create a personal ecosystem of knowledge.

My goal is to use this ecosystem as a means to escape my compulsive scrolling, as well as to create a healthier framework through which to interact and build upon the things I read (rather than mindlessly consuming slop). I intend to apply this framework to most things I read, including online articles, content relating to my work, books, news, and potentially even social media like Reddit posts. The topics I read about are various, ranging from current events, history, sports, politics, etc.

One system I've come to enjoy is categorizing/tagging things I read, then noting it down, so that if I ever want to return to that information in the future, I have an easy way to recall it. I think this will be particularly useful for my writing practice, since writing forces me to come to terms with my understanding (or lack thereof) of whatever subject I am interacting with.

However, I find that this slows down my reading, as well as my enjoyment of reading. Is there a healthy middle ground to obsessively noting things down versus reading something and immediately forgetting it? Yes I acknowledge I am very much overthinking this.
