I can't shut my left eye independent of my right eye.

I have a question that I'm hoping one of you redditers can help me understand. I was beaten badly from a toddler to about 14 when my mother finally lost her hold in me. From a long as I can remember, I haven't been able to close my left eye unless I close my right eye as well.

The belt (her choice of weapon) would swing around and hit me in the face and chest, even though she would make me take my shirt off and hit my back. I've done a little Googling, but could it be caused by nerve damage? I'd really like to get to the bottom of this. I can't really spend the money for a doctor to diagnose this, it's just more annoying now.
