Purchasing carrier locked phone

If I purchase a new carrier locked (at&t) iphone through apple store and put my current at&t sim from my current carrier unlocked iphone in will it be just ready to go? Or will I need to visit and at&t store to have them do something with it? Tyia, have bought unlocked phones for years and just unsure how this works.
