Advice on Mandated Reporting Problems
Throwaway account because of my main being the same name as other of my social media
I recently quit my job at a childcare facility for a variety of reasons. While I was planning to quit, a few incidents recently really made me wanna get out of there as soon as possible. I'm looking for advice on where I can report this specific incident.
I was a floater in almost every room. One day I was in a room with older children. I had an injury and was in a sling. One of the students asked me who "beat me". Taken aback, I thought he said "bit" and said no one bit me. He insisted that he asked who had "beat me". As I'm trained to ask open ended questions, I told him no one beat me and asked him why he thought that was the case. He then went on to tell me a few specifics about abuse in his household and being hit/beat as well as threats his guardians make to him.
I live in NJ where you are not required to go to your bosses before making a report. However, I am not usually in this class, and I didn't have time to check the files in the classroom to make a report I felt would give enough information (address, names of guardians, etc.). I went to my director during break and told her what had happened, told her I wanted to let her know so she could have the information and can make a report since she knows more about the student than I do. To my surprise, she said something along the lines of "Well he's acting way better now so clearly it's working." Out of awe I kind of just went silent. She then said "I didn't hear anything, you didn't hear anything" and left to go to the office.
Of course, I still made the report. I'm a mandated reporter, I had my coworker come in to give me the time to find his file. I called and gave all information possible. I've done all that is necessary for the report regarding this student. I mentioned the director's response but they said they can't really do anything about that. However, I do not feel comfortable leaving my job without anything being reported of this.
A director is also a mandated reporter, to hear someone in that position defend suspected child abuse and even imply that I shouldn't report, is disgusting to me. I could tell this boy was in pain and struggling. I went home that day and cried. To think that someone else could hear the same words and not care at all is baffling. There have been more problems with this facility and even a few citations before (management had threatened and forced a worker to come in while on prescribed pain medication despite it hindering her cognitive ability). But this is the one that I really don't know where to go with for.
My question is: where can I report the facility or the director for this? Is it even a reportable offense if calling the abuse hotline said they can't do anything about it? Is there a licensing number I can call and if so do they handle these types of reports since it's technically related to mandated reporting? I need advice on where to go from here as I honestly just don't feel comfortable knowing this sort of person is running a childcare facility when they try to tell me not to do my legally required role and imply that abuse is okay if it "works".
Thank you in advance for any answers!
