Doing Nothing Made Me More Productive (Here’s How)
I just listened to an Audible podcast called Slow Down: How Doing Nothing Makes Us Better Humans by Constance Kassor, and wow… I didn’t realize how much I needed to hear it.
I’ve been stuck in that cycle of multitasking—phone in hand, bouncing between apps, checking social media, “working” on three things at once—and ending the day feeling like I accomplished nothing. Burned out, unfocused, unmotivated.
This podcast flipped the script for me: sometimes the fastest way to move forward is to stop.
Here’s what I’ve been doing since:
- One-thing rule – No more juggling five tasks at once. I do one thing until it’s done.
- 15-min nothing breaks – I sit in silence, walk outside, or just stare out the window. Sounds weird, works wonders.
- Phone-free mornings – No checking messages first thing. My brain feels calmer all day.
- No-scroll meals – I actually taste my food and enjoy the moment.
The benefits?
- My focus is sharper.
- I’m way more creative.
- I have more energy.
- I feel more present with people.
We don’t always need to do more. Sometimes, we just need to do less—on purpose.
Question for you:
If you could drop one thing from your daily routine for a week just to slow down, what would it be—social media, constant news updates, or multitasking?
