Toad-proof model cities?

So i want to get into modeling first to make a toad enclosure. I'd like to make a miniature villa with live plants as proxies for miniature (ie, moss for bushes). I was hoping someone could point me towards some noob guides, or give some advice on... weatherproofing? Would anything special need to be done to maintain good color and stability? Thanks in advance!
