AIO for thinking about kicking my 18-year-old out?
My 18-year-old son has been spiraling. He is in therapy, but things keep getting worse. Here's what happened this week:
- He stole my car keys while I was on the phone, got high on marijuana, and drove my car. He has no license or insurance. I caught him pulling into the driveway.
- The next day, he came home with a ski mask, an open bottle of stolen alcohol, and admitted to shoplifting.
- Then he stole my phone. While he had it, he transferred $1,000 from my bank account to himself and withdrew it from an ATM. I only realized when I saw a transfer alert while using my computer.
- After I got my phone back, I saw that he had searched for escorts and texted one to meet. He claimed he spent most of the money on drugs but gave me back $440.
- I later got a text from the escort asking if they were still on for 8 pm.
He lies constantly, says he will only tell the truth after a few days, and doesn't show real remorse. All the family is already done with him. I don’t know where he is right now. I don’t know if or when he’s coming back.
Would you kick your kid out at this point?
I know he doesn’t have much going for him, and I worry that kicking him out will make things worse. But I’m getting stolen from, manipulated, and emotionally drained in my own home. I’m scared and exhausted.
Am I overreacting for thinking it's time to draw a hard line?
He was released from jail just two months ago after serving nearly six months for similar behavior. And here we are again.
