How does dating or pre-marriage relationships typically develop before marriage in Baptist circles?

I’m assuming people don’t just propose to someone who is a stranger to them, so there must be some kind of process of discernment, a phase where you get to know each other, spend time together, see if you’re compatible, and then decide whether to move toward marriage. I’d be interested to know what that usually looks like and how long it tends to last.

How much intimacy is acceptable? Is it okay to spend time together alone (e.g., in each others home)?

Would it be okay to lay in bed together just to cuddle (no sex) or would that be crossing a line?
