Where’s the MacGuffin? There’s no MacGuffin!
I didn’t know about this series until a few days ago. Knowing nothing about the series, I just blindly bought the whole series thinking that it was going to be just like Inuyasha, boy was I wrong!
This series fell flat and could have been SO much more! The characters have no drive. They just end up together and piddle around in the feudal era, but don’t have a driving force pushing them to move the plot forward.
The Shikon jewel was the MacGuffin in the world of Inuyasha. Now that it’s destroyed, you mean to tell me Rumiko Takahashi couldn’t come up with another type of MacGuffin to move the plot forward?
The butterflies stealing Setsuna’s dreams could have been a small story arc, and then they give her back her dreams. That could have been a small MacGuffin. But then the other driving force (MacGuffin) could have been to reunite the three main characters with their parents in order to fight forces against the main threat.
I just feel like each episode is its own episode and doesn’t move the plot forward like how Inuyasha did. I feel like this series was a small love note to the fans that wanted to see what happened after their favorite characters got married and had children, but it fell flat at creating a hero’s journey with a MacGuffin.
And if you say, well the rainbow pearls in the half Setsuna and Towa’s eyes are the MacGuffins. No they aren’t. They are the MacGuffins for the bad guys trying to retrieve them, but they aren’t the MacGuffins for the main characters, because they are already in the possession of the main characters.
The main characters should be in search of the other rainbow pearls or something else. There needs to be a driving force to push the plot along. And this show just doesn’t have it unfortunately.
