My Nephew Graduated from Caltech with an Engineering Degree and Still Can’t Land a Job

My nephew is a smart kid. Just graduated from Caltech with an engineering degree. You’d think that would open doors, right? But months later, he still can’t find a job.

As his uncle, I sat him down for a real talk. Not like my sister, who keeps blaming politics and “the system” for everything. I get it. There are challenges out there. But blaming external forces doesn’t help if you’re not even doing the basics.

The more I talked to him, the more I realized he’s book smart but completely lacking in social skills and confidence. He never networked, never built professional relationships, and didn’t even try to get references during college. He bombed every single interview. Not because he’s not qualified, but because he couldn’t present himself well. I told him straight up: it’s not just about what you know, it’s about how you carry yourself. Employers can see your degrees and certifications, sure. But they also want to know if you’re going to be a team player, someone who’s easy to work with, not awkward or problematic.

I’ve given him all the advice I can. I’ve tried to help him understand that you have to make yourself marketable. But his mom keeps feeding him excuses, and I’m just trying to open his eyes to the truth. It’s you. You have to own your growth. You have to learn how to talk to people, how to sell yourself, how to be someone others want to work with.

Anyone else dealt with something like this? How do you help someone who’s smart but completely unprepared for the real world?
