Slow Disco - SPOILER Talk

SpoilerDiscussion

I was a late watch this season- 3 young kids, new job, summer vacation, hit by a bad cold. It’s been a crazy summer

I’m moved by the application of Slow Disco to this theme’s big reveal. Spoilers to follow

There’s something about Carmy and Sydney’s relationship that resonates. I’m sure it has something to do with my being a white man married to a black woman, but given that their relationship isn’t romantic, I think it’s more than that.

There is a steadfastness that transcends 99.9% of professional relationships. They’ve had not just bumps, but Everests in the road and each time they’ve worked through it. They’ve seen each other and supported each other in some extremely vulnerable moments. Over and over again they chose not to give up on each other, to stay the course and keep fighting for what they set out to do together.

As someone who made a huge mistake and left a job I loved in a difficult season for grass that looked greener but wasn’t, watching Syd process similar stimuli in similar ways, but ultimately have the faith and wisdom to see it through was inspiring and had me fist pumping emotionally. “Don’t do what I did Sydney! Stick it out!”

And I know it’s the irony that the writers intended, but still, to have Carmy then reveal his intention to leave was a gut punch. At the end, Carmy is the one leaving. Sydney showed unparalleled loyalty towards Carmy, just for Carmy to forsake her at the next turn.

I can’t remember exactly how Shd phrased it, but something along the lines of “as your partner.” She didn’t want to run a great restaurant, she wanted to run a great restaurant with Carm. It wasn’t just doing something, it was doing something together with him that she chose over greener, easier, more lucrative pastures.

And just like that, he slips his hand from hers.

Will he leave her dancing with a ghost in the end? Or will he make the right decision and stay?
