Is my friendship unhealthy or am I overreacting?
Hi, I’ve been struggling with my best friend. We used to be really close she’d call me her “ride or die” and say we’d be friends forever but lately I’ve been feeling drained and anxious around her.
Here’s what’s been going on: • She recently told me she wants to be “only school friends” because she feels “drained” by me.
• She says she feels drained because I can’t always be there for her, my parents’ rules/behavior make it harder for me to hang out or talk as much.
• Since the very start of our friendship, she’s been controlling about who I can and can’t talk to. She’s told me to avoid certain people just because she doesn’t like them — even if they’ve done nothing to me and sometimes barely even know her. • She gets upset when I talk to our mutual friend. Was friends with her first, and I feel like she doesn’t want me talking to him much because she only wants him to herself. • In the past, she’s pressured me to cut off people simply for being loosely connected to someone she disliked, even if they weren’t part of the drama at all. • She says she doesn’t want big friend groups because of past “breakups,” but still hangs out with people she used to badmouth. • She told me today not to text her “for a while” so she can “heal,” but then still acted normal toward me in school like nothing happened. • I’ve noticed she makes me anxious — I used to get stomach aches when I saw her messages because I was scared I had done something wrong.
I’m not perfect “I’ve made comments that upset her” and I’ve apologized for any stress I’ve caused. But when I’m with my new friends, I feel happy and like I can express myself without overthinking. With her, I constantly feel like I’m walking on eggshells.
I feel like I can’t leave because she’s been my only close friend for so long, but I also wonder if this friendship is unhealthy. Is this friendship toxic, or am I just being too sensitive? How should I handle this going forward?
