Under counter Ice Maker question

Occasionally our under counter ice maker seems to go into a cycle where minimal ice is made and existing ice is allowed to melt away.

Is this an issue with machine or is it common to clear out old stale ice and create fresh ice. Seems to happen every few weeks.
