Can you tell if someone is "African" by their phenotype/ physical appearance?

I'm not talking about people from your country, but people from other countries on the African continent. My friend is Ghanian, but people from Kenya, Mozambique, the Congo etc can tell he's African and not Caribbean or Afro-American/Afro-Latino. This is despite the fact that he speaks with an American accent and was born and raised in the USA.
