Who wouldn’t know the good old-fashioned cliché—from *Frankenstein* to *White Walkers*—where the creation turns against its creator because the creator couldn’t put two and two together. I fucking hate this trope. Orochimaru from *Naruto Shippuden* is without doubt the worst offender, because:
a) Orochimaru himself was always portrayed as a treacherous scumbag, so he should have seen the signs from Sasuke from the very beginning.
b) Sasuke made literally zero effort to hide his intentions.

This [post ](https://www.reddit.com/r/CharacterRant/comments/16i1t7j/orochimarus_original_defeat_at_the_hands_sasuke/)basically covers all my problems with the trope, so I don’t have to bring wood into the forest.

Aizen from *Bleach* is probably the most forgivable case because Ichigo becoming stronger was necessary for pushing Aizen through his own evolutions so he could get stronger. Still, his actions were always way too plot-convenient for my liking. On one hand, he’s portrayed as arrogant and not taking anything seriously; on the other, in certain situations—like against Yamamoto—he over-prepares more than goddamn Batman. This guy had contingencies upon contingencies, so the idea that he didn’t at least entertain the possibility of his guinea pig surpassing expectations—and have some shutdown plan ready, like with Wonderweiss—is at least weird.

Death Devil suffers the most from the three, basically having zero character. Unlike Makima, she has no character flaws to exploit. It’s honestly hilarious how much worse she’s written compared to Makima. Fujimoto tries to pull an “I was behind everything all along” twist **again**, only to completely undermine it by making Death Devil a complete dumb fuck who—despite having perfect surveillance through crows and watching events since Part 1—somehow:
a) missed Nayuta and Fakesaw coming to the rescue in the Falling Devil arc, and
b) had no idea what the Americans were doing.

Compare that to Makima, who had her *1984*\-style omnipresent aura and was completely aware of what the Americans were planning. Death Devil not seeing the obvious consequences of powering up War without proper countermeasures is the cherry on top. All of this could have been avoided if she had either forced Yoru into a contract that would kill her if she tried to enact her plan, or simply turned Asa/Yoru into a pawn a long time ago.

Two years of teasing Death Devil’s master plan, only for the payoff to be my least favorite shounen trope. TrUly SuBvErSivE
