Space Age and Ribbon World

Space Age Question

I was looking for an idea for a new Space Age playthrough. I wanted to play the expansion again and was looking for a way to make it different. So, I stumbled upon some old posts recommending trying ribbon world. Searching further also found posts in Factorio Forum from people complaining about resource placement in this game mode. Since you only get a stripe of what would be the full map, it is easier to get unlucky. Nauvis was ok, I had very little iron in the starter area, but there were big patches nearby. The main issue was getting to uranium, as it took quite a lot of exploration and nest clearing to get to the closest patch.

After establishing the basics in Nauvis, I set up for my first trip to Vulcanus (eager for artillery and cliff explosives). As I land, I see a pretty nice flat area to set up my base, with a nice coal patch and even some tungsten outside demolishers' territories, so I was feeling quite happy with my odds. I start mining some rocks to clear the area and get the pop-up of the completed Tungsten Carbide tech, so I have a quick look at the technology tree, and as soon as I see Calcite Processing, I realize that I have not seen any calcite around. This is pretty bad, so I explore the landing area to find no calcite. I start exploring to the west, and eventually I find I can go no further because of the lava. I try east now, and the first calcite patch appears, it is 20 chunks away, and it would require me to clear a small and a medium demolisher to get to it.

The easiest solution would be to ship turrets and ammo from Nauvis to claim those two territories, but since my Nauvis base is quite basic and my projectile damage is also quite low, this would be painful to pull out, and while I was thinking about it, I realized that I haven't even seen any sulfuric acid geyses yet... I think this will be the (very early) end of my ribbon run.

I know I could use the editor, but I think it would spoil the run anyway, and I would probably find similar issues on the other planets. The ribbon run was fun, but unfortunately, it seems that with Space Age, it is even easier to get unlucky with the resources at some point. Do you guys have any other playthrough ideas that I could try in a new Space Age playthrough?

Thanks!
