Job WFH Policy Changing After I Started - How Do I Express My Disapproval
I started a job at a nonprofit about 40 days ago, and I love it. It feels like such a good fit. The pay isn’t great compared to the market, but that’s nonprofit life, and I feel like I’m actually doing good for the community. I also know I can help grow this organization into an even bigger part of the community.
When I was hired, I was told the remote work policy for hourly employees was based on the honor system and varied by position. My role (operations) is primarily in-person, but with some flexibility to WFH as needed. This was perfect for me—I have two young kids, one of whom is immunocompromised and just starting kindergarten, while the other is in daycare. My kindergartener tends to get sick a lot in the winter, and with a new school, we’re expecting plenty of sick days. Since most of my work is email/computer-based, working from home when needed has never been an issue.
But now… one of our board members (who’s an HR director elsewhere) apparently got in my Executive Director’s ear about the WFH policy, and she’s decided to rescind it completely. It hasn’t been officially announced yet, but in my meeting today she made it clear it’s coming. She gave me the “we give you PTO for a reason so you can have work-life balance” line, and even suggested I could take unpaid time off. But I don’t want to take unpaid time off—and if this winter is like last year, I’ll burn through PTO faster than I earn it, even with my husband taking days too.
I don’t know how to bring this up to my boss, but it feels like such an overreaction. We’re already on the honor system for reporting hours, why not just put a reasonable WFH policy in place instead of banning it outright? My commute is over 20 minutes, and honestly, I barely make enough money to justify it.
Part of me feels really betrayed. Does anyone have any advice on how to approach this?
