AITHA for not Talking to my Dad After he Got me Evicted?

Personal Story

I'll preface this with saying that this is more of a storytime for the boys.

I (31F) stopped talking to my dad (57M) a year and a half ago. At the time, I had owned a trailer that he lived in with his long-term girlfriend, which my grandmother had paid for. For awhile, I was paying the lot rent ($400-450) with my dad's money directly (social security money from being disabled with rheumatoid arthritis). However, his card expired and he refused to give me his new one, which he was claiming never came in the mail. Because he was claiming this, I did end up paying for his rent a few times, including when the leasing office reached out to tell me that they owed and got a notice to aquit. I stopped hearing about the rent and the leasing office never contacted me again. (I did tell them to if this happened again.)

In September of 2023, my dad came to tell me that my mom's boyfriend's son and his girlfriend were moving in and that their rent would cover the lot rent and then some. My dad constantly asked me for money throughout this time and really ever since I got my first job and I always gave him money. We paid for his car insurance and registration and I would make and bring him food. So he was not short on money. I saw him on Christmas and he didn't say anything about the trailer.

In February of 2024, my mom called me to tell me that my dad was saying that the trailer was being "foreclosed" on. This wasn't possible as I owned the trailer outright. However, they could be evicted from the trailer park. Sure enough, my mom found the case. I called my dad and he made excuses, saying that I was off the case, saying that they were working with services in the area to get the eviction dropped, that his girlfriend missed the deadline to hand in the paperwork. Whatever excuse he could think of that would get me to calm down. I got off the phone and SOBBED. I then looked at the case and realized that not only he did get me evicted but there was a court date in two days.

My husband and I had to jump into action. We contacted a lawyer we know who gave us advice and then got us in contact with another lawyer that could help us. That lawyer felt so bad for me that he rearranged his entire schedule so he could come to court with me. I brought the amount that was owed to park (well over $6,000) along with the lawyer fees to court. My dad and his girlfriend never showed up.

It was at this point that I found out that the trailer was supposed to be resident-owned, so I was supposed to be living there as well. I only had the choice to get them out of the trailer one way or another and my lawyer and their lawyer agreed that I could (actually) get the case dropped against me and still put them through the eviction process. This is ultimately what I chose to do.

I tried to talk to my dad about this and see if I could help get him out of the household, take over his fiances, whatever. He avoided me. He dragged out the eviction process. He was literally thrown out of the trailer with all of his stuff because he wouldn't get out when he was told he needed to. When they came to do that, I got texts and calls from them and his sister saying "they're throwing all their stuff on the street." I was in the middle of work and literally couldn't do anything about it.

My husband and I then had to go there and clean the entire trailer and empty out whatever was left. There were needles everywhere (both from drugs and insulin), burnt spoons, the rug in the living room was completely destroyed, and the whole trailer was overwhelming smoke-smelling. I still tried to communicate with them about what was left in there, but they didn't care and were callous about me trying to do the right thing. We cleaned, we got new carpet installed, we painted, and we had our realtor sell the place.

In the end, I paid my grandmother back what she put into it (which I knew she would use on my dad) and kept the rest which hardly covered everything that went into this whole ordeal. My dad didn't apologize, didn't try to see how I was, didn't interact with me. He told everyone else what he was going to do with "his money" though.

The last text I received from him was at the beginning of June 2024 that said "I'm sorry for everything that happened." It was the only text he sent that I didn't reply to. He didn't say happy birthday to me. He didn't say Merry Christmas. He didn't reach out when he found out I was pregnant this year.

And, honestly, my life has been so much less stressful.

So AITHA for not talking to my dad after he got me evicted?

TLDR: My dad chose drugs over paying his rent, which resulted in all of us getting evicted, and costing me thousands of dollars, so I stopped talking to him.
