Can someone help me understand campus 4?

I know there have been several versions, but there is little to no easily avaliable information that let's me know even how many versions there have been.

I have only returned to the most recent mermaid-like campus update and would love for someone to explain the previous ones to me and why they were scrapped/replaced.
