Anthropomorphic Animals and Nuanced/Interesting Themes

I am considering writing an idea I had that was essentially similar to beastars in where its morden in setting (2018 - 2019 to be specific), the world is filled with solely anthropomorphic animal characters, and it takes place in a school most of the time. It follows Baeman Kerr, the embodiment of "Looks like can kill you, is a cinnamon roll" wolf man, hes in a choir group for his college and an English major. I don't have much plot other than that.

Now, believe me. I've been debating and fine tuning a general idea about the story I want. But when it comes down to the plot, I start to stall.

The thing is, its really easy to write a modern take on classism with anthropomorphic animals and sprinkle in a little instinct vs societal norms, but to distance myself from my inspiration, I didn't want make that the whole story. However, its really hard to come up with a theme you can portray well with anthropomorphic animal characters that make the story unique to its diverse character and setting well. Any good ideas?
