Questions about AACE.
I didn’t know what to put as the title, so I hope my description is more explanatory. For reference I registered for AACE. I am a freshman, I signed up because I have a chronic illness, Sickle Cell SS. Due to my constant pain crisis, it makes it hard to get around without using a cane or getting help from someone else to keep me stable while walking. This is mainly because of two factors, the pain crisis, or side effects of my daily medication to keep the pain bearable. I had a 504 and Hospital Home Bound Plan in HS, so I’m assuming AACE gives similar accommodation’s like in HS. I have two questions.
- Can I request help getting around the school with staff, or asking for a wheelchair?
While I do have a cane, my pain is mainly in my spine, hips, and legs, making it harder to move around quickly. Sometimes the pain is too bad and walking is excruciating, so I was wondering if they had wheelchairs at the school, or if I’d need to purchase one myself before the semester starts. For my AACE form, I do have extended time to get to class due to this issue, but it’d be quite embarrassing being late on my first week due to that.
- If I’m out of school for a prolonged time, is there a way to access previous lectures and schoolwork I missed?
I do have a recorder that I’ll take to school with me, but I don’t have any friends to take notes for me if I’m hospitalized for a week or more, so I was wondering how I’d catch up with my classes after a hospitalization. I did hear about the note taker program here, but I’ve also heard at times it’s not reliable as some students may drop the class without notifying the student or not send them at all. I’m not sure if professors record lectures or not and send them to the students or have some external link to access them like in HS.
That’s all the questions I had now, thank you for reading this post and answering my questions in advance.
