Is it back to ask to delay my start by a week considering my circumstances?

I recently got my official start date after waiting for around 8 months. However the start date they gave me is a day after a commitment that I had made earlier in the year. I would only ask to start a week after the start date they gave me and I am asking 3 months in advance.
