Sold off my watch collection and blind purchased a Shunbun. My thoughts after owning it for a week.
I got sick of having so many watches that I never wear, so I decided to sell off my watch collection, along with some gold jewelry I never wore to buy the Shunbun. I narrowed down my collection to a G-Shock (purposed to be a beater), Seiko Arnie (purposed to be a glorified beater), and Grand Seiko Shunbun (purposed to be a daily driver and forever watch). The closest AD was hours away and I just couldn’t make the journey with my current life circumstances. Spoke to a very helpful person from the subreddit, and with their help I locked in on the Shunbun without ever seeing it in person.
When it first came in, immediately I was a little disappointed. Especially because of the cost I paid. The box was really crappy quality, I didn’t really like the weight of the titanium because it made the watch feel cheap. Kind of had a few hours of buyers remorse. As the evening went on I started appreciating it more because the attention to detail started coming through.
Now a week into owning it, and this watch has sealed its title as my forever watch. The titanium is actually a huge positive. I’m not sure why heavy = good quality to many people including myself. It’s so light that I forget it’s on my wrist. That until I see the absolutely stunning polishing on the case, hands, and indices. It shines as bright as a rapper watch with fake diamonds in it, but when it catches your eye it has this very subtle and low profile luxury appearance to it. The dial is amazing. It plays with light in such a unique way that I’ve never seen before on a watch. It almost has a mirror finish to it where the color appears similar to what colors are nearby, but without looking blatant and obvious. Even wearing it at night has been really cool, because the dial’s light reflection is so unique that it looks like it almost glows. It’s super weird, but I’ve never seen anything like it before. I like that it’s not overly loud and flashy, but it has a lot of the loud and flashy features.
Definitely glad I made the purchase. Feels kind of liberating getting a watch I really want rather than a bunch of $1000 watches that I liked a lot but only bought them because they were in my budget at the time. The older I get the less I feel pulled by consumerism, so I’ve been leaning out a lot of unnecessary things in my life. Selling watches that I don’t wear was only one of the decisions to simplify my life. Everything I’ve parted ways with over the past several years felt good. The Shunbun fills that void of my interest in watches perfectly.
