Asking for a friend ;) (M/23) (W/22)
Purely hypothetical (from the male perspective)
You’ve been in a relationship for 2.5 years—it’s your first relationship. She goes abroad as an au pair for 6 months. You haven’t been meeting her needs for a while, and she’s told you multiple times, even though they’re literally the bare minimum. She says she’s thinking about breaking up, and (you were supposed to visit her) that this would’ve been your last chance. She communicates this very clearly.
She’s genuinely unhappy in the relationship, and while she’s abroad, she eventually ends things. She claims she knew for a month that she would break up if nothing changed drastically. By the time she does it, she has zero feelings left and is 100% sure.
But as the guy, you realize what you did wrong, reflect on the relationship, etc. You write her two long letters where you not only apologize but fully acknowledge your mistakes. You know you love her and want to fight for her.
A week later, she calls you crying because she has to confess something. She had a one-night stand the very next day after the breakup—with a guy she never saw again. She swears 100% that she didn’t break up because of him, since she’d only met him the day before and even told him she had a boyfriend.
She claims she never had any intentions, but then he started kissing her, and one thing led to another. (It happened at a campsite, so she didn’t go home with him beforehand.) So while you’re going through the hardest time of your life, she does this.
But she calls you and says it felt wrong in the moment, though she thought, "Fuck it, I’m single now, I wanted to break up anyway." Afterward, she felt so terrible that she deeply regretted it. When she got home from camping and read your letters, she realized it was the biggest mistake of her life, that she loves you more than anything, and wants you back.
As the guy, you know she was a great girlfriend and always loyal. She barely had any contact with other guys and showed zero interest in anyone else.
Now you’re talking, and suddenly she wants to fight for you.
What would your thoughts be? Could you forgive something like this, or could you get the images of her with him out of your head?
Thanks!
