Best workflow for creating mechanical parts? Sketch everythign in the assembly?

I struggle with how to make an assembly in solidworks, how do I make sure the parts have the same/interlocking dimenstions if I am encouraged to make each piece in its own individual file? I know this is a basic question but help is appreciated!
