A short story... The Far-Dreamer & the Lion (The Myth of Pallóriel and Kaerion)
In an age before memory, the world was shadowed. The stars had dimmed, their patterns scattered by storms of grief. The night was so thick and heavy that even the moon could not find her way home.
In the far reaches of the sky, a Dreamer stirred. She was not of earth alone. Her eyes carried the weight of grief from worlds not forgotten. The golden light of the stars curled itself around her hands. Where she touched, sparks bloomed. She wove constellations from silence, giving lost travelers a map to find themselves again. Her only demand? That the truth even in its darkness must always be spoken.
But light draws danger as well as hope. The darkness noticed her. It crept closer, whispering that her work was futile, that her stars could not outlast its hunger. Then came the sound. Slow deliberate footsteps pressing into the earth. A flicker of gold at the edge of shadow. Eyes like molten dusk, unblinking. The Dreamer’s heart trembled in fear.
Out of the darkness came the Lion. His mane burned like dusk caught in flame, his eyes unblinking in the face of shadow. He had walked battlefields and deserts, oceans and ruins. But here in the light of the Dreamer’s hands he found something worth guarding. Not a temple, but a soul. It was not her light he wanted to claim. But the right to guard it.
The Lion did not cage her, or command her path. Instead, he prowled the edges of her world, a guardian to the dreaming sky. When she bent low over her starlit maps, he kept watch. When her light faltered, he roared. Not in anger or to frighten her. But to warn the darkness that she is not alone.
They were not bound by chains, nor vows written on stone. The bond was older than such things. It was a recognition written in the souls of two beings who had survived too much to believe in coincidence. She was the far dreamer, the one who reached beyond what could be touched. He was the lion, the one who kept her reaching safe.
And so the night sky held its balance. The Dreamer crafting her constellations. The Lion guarding the ground beneath them. Between them a trust deeper than the stars. Together they kept the darkness away, and the stars no longer feared the night.
