Is doing research even good enough anymore?

I am a 9th grader that just started school and I see people always saying they do research but at the same time from what I have heard everyone does research these days. I have also heard that colleges like unique extracurriculars not common ones. I have seen this first hand because I publish some of these papers. Do you think it is valuable to do research?
