Creating Uni-Themed Merch Without Infringing Trademarks
Hi all,
LOCATION: Sydney, Australia
I’m a university student in Australia and I’ve been working on some merch ideas (stickers, tote bags, shirts, etc.). I want to make them more appealing and unique, but obviously, I’m aware that the university’s name, logo, and crest are trademarked.
I don’t want to get into any legal trouble, so I’m looking for advice on:
- What I can and can’t use (e.g., uni name, photos of campus buildings, architectural outlines, iconic locations??).
- How to check if a design element is protected by copyright or trademark.
- Whether I can make “inspired” designs (e.g., cartoon versions of campus scenery) without infringing.
- Any specific Australian IP laws I should read up on or free resources that explain them in plain English.
Has anyone here dealt with making merch that’s related to a school, company, or brand in Australia without crossing the legal line? Any pointers for how to proceed would be much appreciated.
Thanks!
