Returning as an ExPat/Dual Citizen
Looking for some advice on my situation
Currently living in the USA, green card through American spouse, will get citizenship within the next 9-12 months
Now while the earning power is outstanding here (our HHI about $375k), the culture and work life balance and the prospect of my kids going to school here is less appealing
Right now the eldest is 4, and ideally we’d move back before secondary school age
The question is - how much should we aim to have stashed away before we return, apologies for working in dollars here but this is our current NW situation:
$150k in US property equity (150k mortgage left) $250k in UK property equity (350k mortgage left)
$100k in UK pension $100k in US brokerage $200k in US retirement investments
Both properties we rent out (the USA one is on a 2% mortgage fixed full term so selling would be dumb), but upon return to the UK we’d probably sell our UK property (flat in London, worth about $650k) and get something cheaper further out
Like I said, we make good money and save a lot (probably $100k a year goes into either mortgage over-payments or savings accounts)
Jobs wise my spouse could keep their job (they’re a contractor for an international firm) and I could go freelance and have a pipeline of $3k easily - but up to $25k a month
What would your play be? Buckle down and max savings in the USA? Or save a little less for a more comfy lifestyle? Get out sooner or stick it out for longer?
I’m a bit lost because the earning power is so much higher than back in Blighty, but the USA Can be a soul crushing place to exist in
