Question about The Stand, chapter 54
This is the day after the first big public meeting in Boulder. The committee is having a private meeting.
If I understand correctly, Glen (a character that I find a little bit irritating) wants to lock up people who want to leave the Free Zone.
I find this very problematic. First of all, it wouldn’t be a free zone then would it? Not free if you can’t leave. That sounds like something Randall Flagg would do. Secondly, it would be grossly unconstitutional. They had just re-ratified the US Constitution the day before!
Glen says he’s worried that people who leave could give secrets to Flagg. I think this is a very weak argument for taking such an extreme measure as locking people up. What would be the crime? How long will they be locked up? What if they resist? The other Boulder citizens could revolt against the committee. It could lead to a complete breakdown of the fledgling society. I really think Glen’s proposal is completely nonsensical. Am I completely missing something here?
