Degradation of Fight Choreography in 80s/90s American Action Movies
I've been watching a lot of action movies from the past lately, some from the East, some from the West. All these movies are from the 60s to the 90s, and what I noticed was how superior the fight choreography was in Eastern movies. You could look at any of the big Western action movies from that time, but just as an example, take Bloodsport. That movie has some horrendous fight choreography. The movie had to be heavily edited to make up for it. The side characters (those also in the tournament), came across as actors pretending to fight rather than fighters acting (hope that makes sense). Movies now, like John Wick, have vastly improved in this area, but back then, it was pretty bad.
Then you look at the Hong Kong movies from the time, such as Shaw Brothers films, and the fight choreography was just superior in every way. Even though the fight scenes were stylized, more like a dance routine, they still supersede anything that was coming out of the West during that time and later.
And that led me to wonder why that was case, considering there was so much more money dedicated to movie making in the West than in the East. You have these massive Hollywood movies that had subpar choreography; yet, they were aware of all the "Kung Fu" movies coming out of Hong Kong (some from Japan) and incorporated nothing it seems. Was there a reluctance to learn from them? What would it have cost Hollywood movie producers and directors to hire someone from Hong Kong?
Perhaps the UFC (and MMA) changed people's perspective on martial arts because it seems that starting in the 2000s, movies started to take a more gritty, realistic tone. Granted, it was the popularity of action movies that enabled the UFC to even be born, IMO, as the 80s/90s were the golden age of the action movie. No doubt it was that popularity that inspired the inception of the UFC, but somehow, in turn, I believe the UFC changed the way action movies were made, to make them resemble an actual fight more.
Bit of a tangent there, but I'm just curious as to why the East were much more ahead of the West, in fight choreography, and why the West did not incorporate and learn from the East. I find it strange that some of these big time movies from Hollywood in the 80s and 90s had worse fight choreography than what was coming out of Hong Kong in the 60s and 70s. Or am I the only one that believes this?
