Can you run a portable ac unit with a freon leak on fan only?

Incredibly dense question to ask but wanted to be safe. I assume the freon only starts moving when it’s cooling so I won’t be running the ac cooling mode, just the fan. Or do i need to remove the unit from the room completely? It runs r410a
