The more I marinate on this game, the more it rubs me the wrong way [spoilers]

SpoilerMafia: The Old Country

I've only played this once so I may have missed stuff but I have way too many gripes about this game.

  1. Length of story
    1. I'm usually one to campaign for short campaigns that don't overstay their welcome. Prior to this I had just finished south of midnight, which was also short and straight to the point. I feel however a lot of steps were skipped with TOC and things happened too abruptly. We went from being an carusu nobody to a terminator. All we had was a tutorial on how to handle a knife, cue a few chapters later and Enzo start handling all kinds of guns with deadly accuracy. There was no buildup. I would have appreciated a chapter or two where the story ramps up to Enzo becomes a one-man army.
  2. The story and Chapters themselves.
    1. In continuation with the above, should I would have appreciated it the game took more time for us to build a relationship with the characters. I felt it skips way too many years. The Torriso family was not interested in messing with spadaro or any other gang. I have no idea which mafia family acts like this. If they did it in real live they would have been squashed in an instant. Things just seem to fall into the family from heavens above. Other than the case of whiskey that was confiscated, the torrisi family literally had no problem procuring anything for the quests they set on. There should have been more quests related to smuggling or intercepting shipments of armaments amongst other things. We should have had a quest or two sabotaging facilities and trade routes for rival gangs or else defended our own. Instead Torrisi had a friendship with a don who seems inept at smuggling a case of wine, but no problem smuggling crates of american arms and even a full blown carozzella. Speaking of a carozzella, this is another gripe I had. How convenient was it that our American friends just happen to send over a car that's falling to bits and that Pasquale magically fixes it? That should have called for a mission revolving around a train heist. The Train was already there and the only time it's used is for a test drive of the car. It would have been funner and more fulfilling had it been to have to pay off a snitch that tells you when a train containing competitor vehicles is coming by, having to plan a heist, obtain dynamite or hijack it to de-couple one of the carts carrying a competitors car.
    2. Things happen too conveniently and quickly in the game. I understand the context of the story so I have no qualms with how Don Torrisi handled his daughter or how Cesare acted like a spoilt nepo-kid. What I can't handle is how suddenly luca has a baby and you're off to baptism, just to serve as a lead up to the church piazza shootout. Similarly how Isabella just drops the bomb on her pregnancy and 2 minutes later you're killing the don. No buildup, no time to think about what it means
  3. Combat
    1. Knife fights got way too repetitive, and how convenient is it that both men are honourable enough to stick to knives? Why does enzo always seem to lose his pistol and rifle the second he enters a knife fight (and vice versa).
    2. The stakes are never high. There's always ample ammo and guns. The enemies literally throw themselves at you. Grenades barely put a dent in your progress. Ammo is unlimited on horses and cars and you're near invincible.
  4. The ending
    1. How the fuck, does a one-man killing machine, manage to kill swathes of mafiosi armed to the teeth, only to feel sorry for Cesare, who later hugs him and kills him? I felt like I wasted 13 hours of my time at that point. As I mentioned before, I have no qualms with the way cesare acted, it was par for the course and predictable, however Enzo, who spent a few years in the family, should have also seen that from a mile away and yet he literally goes head first for a hug. This is the same guy that single handedly wiped 2 mafia families and a baron.

Anyway, thanks for reading my semi-coherent rambling. I just had to write this because this game really rubbed me the wrong way and had so much potential.
