The real problem with the metaphor
I think when discussing why the mutant metaphor doesnt work We often forget the elements of intersectionality and real world pillars of oppression the comics often doesn't ask who does the oppression of mutants benefit, in the real world opression exist to justify certain political and societal structures But that's not the case with the mutants it doesn't map as a parallel to any other minority status in the real world because it doesn't have that element of being connected any of pillars of oppression ie white supremacy, patriarchy, capitalism or abelism. This lack intersectionality and understanding of why oppression occurs is why I think X-men comics and xmen fans often have this disconnect with the messages of the story, it's why fans can come to the conclusion that mutants are the problem in some cases despite that's not true for any real life minority groups because no one is responsible for their own oppression only the oppressor. There also isnt any strong, consistent examples of actually systemic opression in the comics it's always big spectacles and individuals rather than the real world in which bigotry is weaved into the fabric of our society(which the constant big tragedies could be contributed to the fact that this a comic and you then need spectacles)
