Is there a real difference between Gold and Platinum?

Points - Question

Hi All...sorry if this is a dumb question but I'm fairly new to American's loyalty program. (Tbh I'm fairly outdated on most status programs since my heavy business travel ended in 2010). I've been starting to travel more internationally for fun and noticed I end up on American flights more than other carriers. So I ended up getting one of their credit cards. I'm probably going to end up with gold just by spending and the flights I have planned. Originally, I planned on stopping spend on that cc at that point but was wondering is there any benefit to reaching platinum? I was basically using American as a catch all card since I wanted to build American points. (Before Citi partnered up)

I saw upgrades don't apply for international flights but does it matter at all if you have more status for when they start doing cash or point offers for upgrades? Or is this basically platinum will have a slightly higher chance than gold on domestic flights... thanks
